PROGRAMS
& EVENTS
Some of the many programs offered are: storytelling, book groups,
drop-in craft programs and a variety of performers. All programs
are sponsored by the Friends of the Winchester Public Library
and are free of charge. Thus, the programs are open toWinchester
residents only.
May – “From Sea to Shining Sea” Month
- Thursday, May 8 at 3:30 p.m. in the Meeting Room- “Or Would You Rather Be a Fish?” with storyteller/singer, Mary Jo Maichack – ages 3 and up. Tickets available in the Children’s Room
- Monday, May 12 at 4 p.m. in the Meeting Room – “Oceans Away” by KLS Magic Castle Puppet Theater – ages 3 and up. Tickets available in the Children’s Room.
- Tuesday, May 20 at 3:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room – “Message in a Bottle” workshop for ages 6-9. Stories and activities. Sign up in the Children’s Room.
- Thursday, May 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room – “A Pirate’s Life” presented by Moonship Productions – ages 4 and up – Sign up in the Children’s Room
“Sing Along with Liz”
Bring the little ones to a sing along with Liz Buchanan on Tuesday, May 27 at 11:15 in the Meeting Room. Ages 2 and up. Drop in for a lively celebration of music! |

STORYTIMES
Preschool Storytimes
Regular storytimes are now for preschoolers,
ages 2-4. The Children’s Librarians will choose
topics, books, and activities for a wider range of ages.
You may come on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday at
10:30 a.m. – whatever is convenient for you! So that all may have a
positive experience:
- Please come on time – if
late, enter quietly through the door on the far right
- If there is an attention problem,
please leave – but try again another day!
- Please limit adult conversations
to pre- or post- storytime.
Family
Storytime - Saturday, May 17 at 10:30 a.m. in the Storytime Room. Ages 2-5. Drop in.
Pajama Storytime - Monday, May 5 and Thursday, May 22 at 6:15 p.m. in the Storytime Room. Ages 2-5. Drop in.
First Mondays Imagination
Workshop
Next session: Monday,
May 5 at 3:30 p.m. in the Storytime Room.
Join us for folktales and fairytales, crafts and other activities on the first Monday of each month. Geared to children ages 5, 6, 7, this is a continuing drop-in program that meets in the Storytime Room.
Second Mondays “First
Step into Storytime”
The next session will be on Monday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. On the second
Monday of each month, a special storytime
is held for children who are 2 years old –
graduates of Pattycake Place. The storytime
is expressly designed as the first such experience
for the toddler, with appropriate books and activities.See you there, “growing-up”
children!

PATTYCAKE
PLACE for children ages birth to two

Pattycake Place will continue throughout
the year on Thursday mornings from from
10:00 to 11 a.m. Stories, fingerplays, songs,
and free play with toys are offered for children ages birth to two.

Forever Books List:
The Childrens Room has put together a list of recommended
books for establishing a home library. Reference books and childrens
literature that will last a lifetime are included. Pick up the list
in the Childrens Room.

LIBRARY
CARDS
Children may obtain their first library card at age 4. As they are
responsible for the materials borrowed on the child's card, a parent
or legal guardian must be present to sign the registration form. In
addition, the adult must provide identification showing his/her name
and current address.

Computers are available in-house for Internet access, children's
games
and word processing.

The Children's Department has:
- books

- a Parent-Teacher collection
- travel kits
- "Parent Pack" book kits.

OUTREACH
TO SCHOOLS
One of the missions of the Children's Department is to maintain
a close relationship with the schools. The librarians work with
the teachers to identify materials that will enhance and enrich
their classroom work. Unique teacher services include:
- Materials may be borrowed, with a teacher card, for an extended
period
- Librarians will create "Teacher Packs" on given themes
to extend the curriculum
- Librarians will give tours of the library, tailored to specific
age groups
- Visits to the school can include special programs, booktalks
and storytimes
