Our First LEGO WeDo Robotics Program was Great!

Yesterday we held the first session of our three-week LEGO WeDo Robotics workshop for kids in grades 2-3. We did a quick ice-breaker to get to know each other, then we dove right in.

With this age group we’ll be focusing on simple machines. At yesterday’s session we learned about gears. We built a lion out of LEGOS with some motorized gears inside. Then we plugged them into our computers and learned some basic programming language to make the lion sit up, roar, and lay back down at just the press of a button! We discussed how the computer program the kids wrote controlled the motor, how the motor moved the gears, and how the gears worked to make the lion’s legs move.

All of the participants did an excellent job working with their partner, figuring out how to build the machine, and experimenting with the computer program until they got it. Everyone’s computer programs were slightly different from each other, so we learned that there are multiple ways to solve the same problem!

This workshop will run for two more weeks, then we’ll do a three-week workshop for kids in grades 4-5. If you wanted to sign up for this workshop but didn’t make it before it filled up, never fear! We’ll be doing both workshops again before the year is out!

Check out our Facebook post to enjoy some photos of the fun getting started! Confession: Once the kids really got into the building and programming, I forgot to take any photos. Hopefully I’ll get more next week.

Registration has started for the first of our fall LEGO WeDo Robotics workshops!

Throughout the rest of this year, we’ll be offering LEGO WeDo Robotics workshops for children in grades 2-5. Workshops will run as series of three ninety-minute sessions, and will be offered for specific grade ranges. Kids will learn about simple machines and other STEM related topics, then use LEGOs and LEGO computer programming software to create machines and make them move!

Registration will begin three weeks before the first date of each session, and kids are encouraged to come to all three workshops in the session. First priority is given to Winchester residents. You can register online or speak with a librarian in-person or over the phone. You’ll want to register quickly because participation is limited and these programs tend to fill up quickly!

Keep an eye out for some awesome LEGO workshops starting up in September! We’ll use LEGO WeDo equipment to build simple machines, and we’ll learn basic computer programming to make them move. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn some STEM skills in a really fun way.

Workshops will be presented in 3-week series based on kids’ grades, and registration will be required. We’ll hold multiple sessions throughout the fall, so lots of kids should get a chance to participate! Make sure you check our calendar to find out more, or stop in and talk to a librarian about it.

Stuffed Animal Sleepover!

This week we had our annual Stuffed Animal Sleepover! Unfortunately for Chester, the stuffed animals got into a bit of trouble... Check out their latest adventure here.

Authorfest 2016

This week was Authorfest! We were so excited to welcome Anna Alter to the library! She met with our Preschool Storytime Club as well as many of our friends from local preschools around town! We were all very interested to hear how she comes up with her stories and illustrations. We had a blast collaborating on a drawing with her. Check out some of the photos from our morning with Anna below...
