LEGO Mindstorms: Tons of Fun and Still Space!

Our first LEGO Mindstorms workshop began yesterday for kids in 4th and 5th grade!

This workshop will run for 6 weeks, going until Wednesday, April 5. We began with an Hour of Code, where we did some block programming to develop a Minecraft game. This gave the kids an opportunity to learn some basics about more advanced computer programming than we did in the LEGO WeDo workshops. Now we're prepared to tackle the computer programming for Mindstorms robots!

After we did a bunch of coding, we pulled out a Mindstorms kit and worked as a team to start putting together a simple machine. We will dive much more into this next week at our second session.

We had a great group, but there are still a few open spaces in this workshop. If your 4th or 5th grade child is interested, you can still register! Sessions run on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-5:00pm, now through April 5. Register online here, or call or stop in to the library if you want more information.

Also, we only had time to do one Hour of Code computer programming activity. There are tons more that kids can do! Kids who participated yesterday may be interested in trying some more, or kids who are interested in signing up for the rest of the workshops can try what we did yesterday from home. Check it out at https://studio.code.org/ (psst: we did the Minecraft activity!).

You’ve all been waiting and asking, and we’re finally ready with a LEGO Mindstorms workshop!

Beginning on March 1, we will host a six-week LEGO Mindstorms workshop for kids in grades 4 and 5. It will run from 3:30-5:00pm and will go through Wednesday, April 5. Space will be limited, and registration is going on now!

We’ll be using LEGO Technic materials and a more complex computer programming language to create awesome machines. Take a look at some of the things we’ll be working on! And check out our calendar to register.

Chromebooks in the Children's Room

Did you know kids can now check out a Chromebook for in-library use? All they need is their library card!! Stop by the Children's Room for more information!

First LEGO Workshops of 2017

We kicked off our 2017 LEGO science programming with a two-week LEGO WeDo Robotics workshop for kids in grades 2 & 3.

We briefly discussed simple machines and how they would be incorporated into the machines we’d be making. We also covered the basics of computer programming and how to use the LEGO software. Then, in pairs, kids chose which LEGO machines they wanted to build and program.

Since kids were able to choose their own projects, we got to see a much wider variety of creations! Here’s a collection of photos from both sessions!

The group gets started!

We're starting to get familiar with the LEGO software.

Building is underway!

This team chose to make the spinning top. During our second workshop, we watched a video about using this top in microgravity on the International Space Station!

This pair was also working on the spinning top!

This team made a pair of legs that kicked a "soccer ball" (made of aluminum foil).

Happy New Year!!

Happy New Year from the Children's Room!! Stay tuned for new, exciting changes and programming!

Coming Up in the New Year

The end of the year does not mean the end of our LEGO programming.

In January we’ve got a two-week LEGO WeDo workshop for kids in grades 2-3 on Thursdays, January 19 and 26. It’ll be from 4:30-6:00pm. Kids who’ve already attended a LEGO workshop OR kids who’ve never tried it before are all welcome. Registration will be required and will start on December 29.

Keep an eye on our calendar to find out when we’ll be doing more workshops, including when we’ll start working with Mindstorms in addition to WeDo robotics materials.
