Week of March 25th

In 1968, E.L. Konigsberg became the only author (so far) to receive both the Newbery Medal and a Newbery Honor in the same year. She won the Medal for her beloved classic, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler, and an Honor for the lesser-known Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth. Konigsberg also won the Newbery Medal in 1997 for The View from Saturday.

Almost everyone knows the story about the sister and brother who run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, but many of today's readers overlook this forgotten classic. Elizabeth is new in town and has no friends until she meets Jennifer, an unusual girl who just happens to be a master witch.

Konigsberg is a masterful writer, and this, her first novel, is no exception. Like many authors she started her career as a teacher. She was inspired to write when she realized that many of her students were "softly comfortable on the outside and solidly uncomfortable on the inside*." This understanding of the inner life of her characters ensures her books' enduring appeal.
