Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) 124 Min, Ang Lee
From celebrated director Ang Lee (The Ice Storm, Sense and Sensibility) comes a movie so visually stunning that it strikes a "beautiful balance of elements mellow, harmonious and poignantly funny" (The Washington Post). This "charming study of love, family and tradition” (Leonard Maltin) "tickles both mind and body" (Movie Reviews UK). Trouble is cooking for widower and master chef Chu (Sihung Lung) who's about to discover that no matter how dazzling and delicious his culinary creations might be, they're no match for the libidinous whims of his three beautiful but rebellious daughters. A master in the kitchen, Chu is at a loss when it comes to the ingredients of being a father. Every Sunday, he whips up a delicacy of dishes for his ungrateful daughters, who are so self-consumed that they don't see his attempt to show them love gastronomically. So, as relationships sour and communications break down, Chu concocts a sure-fire recipe that will bring his family back together: He creates his own love affair to rival his daughters' affections!
Monsoon Wedding (2001) 114 Minute Mira Nair, R
Two families from different cultures come together for an arranged marriage in New Delhi during the monsoon season. Between a stressed-out father, a bride with a burning passion for someone else and a wedding planner with her own agenda, forget the rain! It will be a miracle if the wedding happens.
Keys to the House (2004) 105 Minutes, Director: Gianni Amelio, PG13
“Prepare yourself for suffering if you intend to be close to him.” So speaks a mother of a child with severe disabilities to Gianni, the father of a developmentally disabled 16 year old . Gianni abandoned the boy at birth when the child’s mother died. Now he confronts his obligations as a father and embarks in the adventure of getting to know his son while exploring other medical approaches for his disabled son.
Chocolat (2000) 121 Minutes, Director: Lasse Halstrom, PG13
A tantalizing tale about desire! Vianne Rocher and her 6 year old daughter open a chocolate shop in a provincial French village. The townspeople are shocked when Vianne leaves her shop open during Lent, but her confections are too tempting for them to resist.
